Biography

1927
Born and raised on 27 April in Vreden Westphalia, near the Dutch border.
1943-1945
Flak assitant in Münster then deployment at the front in the Second World War.
1946
A-levels in Borken/Westphalia.
1947-1949
Apprenticeship as a stone and wood sculptor with the Sievers company in Münster.
Worked on the reconstruction of the city of Münster, including buildings such as the Münster Castle, the Episcopal Palace and various damaged churches. 1949 Journeyman's examination.
1949-1952
Werkkunstschule Münster. Master class with Professor Kurt Schwippert. 1956 Master stonemason and wood sculptor examinations passed. 1951-1959 studied architecture at Darmstadt Technical University.
1959
Diploma with Professor Ernst Neufert.
1950-1953
Studied art and sculpture at the Stuttgart Academy of Arts, master class colleague with Otto Hajek, among others.
1957
Exhibited in "Junger Westen 57", Recklinghausen, Germany.
1959
Marriage to Ilse Gewers, née Strauss, also a sculptor. Birth of sons Bernhard 1960, Gregor 1961 and Georg 1962
1959
Begins working as a freelance artist for state, church and private clients. Sculptures, reliefs, experimental works in bronze, aluminium and concrete. Various graphics and first "forest pictures".
1960
Founding member of the "Neue Gruppe 60", Münster.
1963
Foundation of his own studio in Hagen a. T. W., Am Borgberg, called "Die Werkstatt". Relocation of the family from Bevergern to Hagen a. T. W.
Main focus on public and church designs.
Many free works in the course of the entire oeuvre in different work phases.
1965
Member of the artists' group "Die Schanze", Münster.
1966
Member of the Bund Bildener Künstler, BBK Osnabrück.
Represented in various exhibitions.
1972-1994
Teaching at the technical college for construction and design in the city of Osnabrück.
2012
Works until the beginning of 2012.
